Smiling woman brushing her teethCavities are not the only threat to your dental health. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, at least 50% of adults have a form of gum disease. Gingivitis is the first stage of the infection, which is easy to treat. However, if the infection is allowed to progress, it can lead to tooth loss and affect your overall wellness negatively. Here’s how you can stop the infection in its tracks using home remedies for gingivitis.

What is Gingivitis?

Gingivitis is caused by bacteria in plaque and tartar buildup, which often occurs from poor oral hygiene. The gums can become inflamed, sensitive, and may bleed easily when brushing and flossing. Good oral hygiene and regular dental care can reverse gingivitis.

Without any intervention, gingivitis can progress to advanced periodontitis, which is more difficult to treat. The infection can destroy your bone and supporting structures of your teeth, causing them to loosen and fall out. Bacteria from the infection may also enter your bloodstream, increasing your risk of many health conditions, including heart attacks, Alzheimer’s, and diabetes.

How to Treat Gingivitis Naturally

Do not ignore the early signs of gingivitis. You can take several steps at home to restore your gum health, including:

  • Brush Your Teeth Twice Daily: Brush your teeth for 2 minutes at least twice a day using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss Daily: Brushing alone can leave up to 40% of your teeth surfaces unclean because your toothbrush can’t reach everywhere in your mouth. Daily flossing will remove plaque and food residue from areas missed when brushing.
  • Replace Your Toothbrush Regularly: Your toothbrush should be replaced every 2 to 3 months, or when your bristles are worn. Whichever comes first, change your toothbrush regularly to ensure it is cleaning your teeth effectively.
  • Rinse with Salt Water: Salt water is a natural antiseptic to kill bacteria. It can also ease inflammation and discomfort from gingivitis.
  • Avoid Tobacco: Smoking and tobacco increase your risk of gingivitis and many other dental problems, including cavities and oral cancer.
  • Moderate Alcohol: Alcohol affects your body’s immune system, which can make you more prone to infections that are more difficult to treat.

Schedule a Cleaning and Checkup

In addition to addressing gingivitis at home, contact your dentist to schedule a cleaning and checkup. They’ll assess your gum health to determine if you require any additional treatments. They may recommend more frequent cleanings and checkups to keep your gums healthy.
